Comments on Colonial Affairs.
(a) Following an address by Dr. Wang Shih-chih, Chinese Minister for Foreign Affairs, all Hong Kong Chinese papers (except Wah Kiu Yat Po) gave prominence to the problems of the retrocession of Hong Kong and Macao. Comment was restrained, and little interest aroused.
(b) The War Memorial Fund for aiding those who suffered by the War is welcomed as superior to a monument (Wah Kiu Yat Po, 19/5).
4.
Comments on International Matters.
(a) Hwa Shiang Pao of 23/5, predicts that lack of dollar exchange will compel Britain to increase her trade with Russia and Eastern Europe generally.
(b) Viet Namh have sent representatives to Hong Kong and Canton to discuss terms for co-operation with Bao Dai, who abdicated, and other leaders (Sing Tao Jih Pao, 24/5).
(c) The probability of a United States-Russian clash in Korea is envisaged (Sing Tao Jih Pao, 21/5).
(a) Britain is described as holding the Balance of Power between U.S.A. and Russia. It is possible that British diplo- macy may prevent actual war -- (Kung Sheung Daily Press, 22/5).
(e) There is little news of the movement for the retro- cession of Macau, about which so much has been written lately.
